Group classes are called Awareness Through Movement®. It is a verbally directed technique designed for a group of students with lessons lasting about one hour. Active movements, imagery, sensory cues, and suggestion are all used in thematically-linked movement sequences. Read some examples of Awareness Through Movement.
Unlike calisthenics, or other, repetitive exercise, Awareness Through Movement lessons are somatic explorations which create improvement by inducing your own natural intelligence. An Awareness Through Movement teacher doesn't show you or tell you the end-game. You are directed only to explore possibilities of movements and their constraints as a way to discover how you approach your own movement. It is through this process of guided attention that improvements occur.
